Questions You Might Have About Starting Therapy

Clear answers to help you feel confident taking the first step

Starting therapy is a big decision, and it's completely natural to have questions. We’ve organized the most common questions we hear into categories to make it easier to find the information you're looking for.

If you don't see your question answered here, please don't hesitate to reach out. We are happy to address any concerns or provide additional information during your free consultation call.

Common Frequently Asked Questions

  • If you're considering therapy, that's already a sign that some part of you recognizes it might be helpful. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many people find it valuable for managing stress, improving relationships, developing better coping skills, or working through life transitions. If you're experiencing persistent anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or feeling stuck, therapy can provide both support and practical tools for moving forward.

  • The first step is to schedule a free 15-minute consultation call. You can do this by clicking the "Schedule Consultation" button on any page of this website, calling us directly at 347-201-0492, or emailing hello@authenticinsightpsych.com. During this brief call, we'll discuss what brings you to therapy, whether our approach is a good fit for your needs, and if we decide to work together, we'll schedule your first full session.

  • The first session is an opportunity to get to know each other and for your therapist to understand what brings you to therapy. You will be asked  questions about your current challenges, your history, and your goals for therapy. You'll have a chance to ask questions about the process and share what you're hoping to get out of our work together. By the end of the first session, we'll collaborate on developing an initial treatment plan.

  • Individual therapy sessions are 45-minutes long or 60-minutes long, depending on clinical need. The free consultation call is 15 minutes.

  • Most clients start with weekly sessions, as this provides consistency and momentum in the work. As you make progress, we might reduce frequency to every other week or monthly maintenance sessions. The frequency is flexible and based on your needs, goals, and circumstances.

  • I currently provide all therapy sessions virtually through secure, HIPAA-compliant video technology. Online therapy offers quality clinical care while also providing flexibility and convenience. Some clients prefer virtual sessions because they feel more comfortable in their own space and appreciate not having to commute.

  • We are out-of-network with all insurance companies. However, you may still be able to receive partial reimbursement, as many insurance plans offer out-of-network benefits.  We can provide you with a superbill (detailed receipt) that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. The amount you receive back depends on your specific plan's out-of-network coverage.

  • A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes all the information your insurance company needs to process an out-of-network claim. After each session, we can provide you with a superbill that includes the date of service, diagnosis codes, procedure codes, and our provider information. You submit this directly to your insurance company, and they may reimburse you according to your out-of-network benefits.

  • We understand that life happens and sometimes you need to reschedule. I ask for at least 48 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours notice, or missed appointments without notice, will be charged the full session fee as we have reserved that time specifically for you.
